Advanced
language technology
We have experience of 35 years in developing rule-based language technology called SALAMA. Our most important test language was originally
Swahili, a Bantu language that is rapidly expanding and has more than 150
million speakers in Eastern and Central Africa.
More recently, we have applied the technology also to other languages, such as Finnish and English.
Our specialization includes the following:
- high quality spelling checker and hyphenator for
Swahili
- production of annotated word lists from Swahili text - including English glosses
- accurate information retrieval using analysed and disambiguated text as target
- a dictionary compiler for Swahili - English dictionaries
- a rule-based translator of text from Swahili to English
- a rule-based translator of text from English to Swahili
- a rule-based translator of text from English to Finnish
- a language learning system for Swahili
Most of the above applications can be tested on SALAMA web page: 77.240.23.241
Much of the recent development in SALAMA technology has been described in te publication
